The next day (January 1st, 2007) the streets were bare and very few people in sight… little to nothing was opened, but Brianne and I decided it would be a good time to do some more exploring and see some more of Barcelona’s beautiful architecture, while Karla opted to stay in the room and continue to rest. Our primary goal was to walk to the water so that we could see the Mediterranean, something we had not yet done. So we started out walk… after about three hours of weaving in and out of small alley streets and seeing some amazing structures, we decided to walk no further as it was starting to get dark. We started our walk back to the hotel and on the way picked up a pizza from Pizza Hut (yes, Pizza Hut in Spain) for Karla who I expected was fairly hungry.
January 2nd, 2007 we actually slept in a bit, mainly because we couldn’t do too much due to the face that we had to be out of the hotel by 1:00PM. After we checked out we had little choice but to head back to the Barcelona Airport to sit around until our 9:30PM flight back to London. Luckily the Barcelona airport was gigantic and very well laid out with shops, restaurants etc, and unlike most other airports we’ve been to, you could check-in and go through security any time you wanted, not just 2 hours before your flight. So that was really nice.
Our flight back to London Gatwick went really well and because we were so early (actually we were the 1st, 2nd and 3rd people to check into that EasyJet flight) we got really good seats right near the front of the aircraft. Once we landed, went through customs and were waiting to pick-up our checked luggage, I turned on my cell phone and received a shiny new text message. Phil Taylor had come to greet us at the Airport! I was pretty excited, despite the fact that Phil and I have been doing business together for a few years (he is the developer of mosListMessenger a port of ListMessenger to Joomla) we had never met in person before. So here we were, waiting for our luggage while Phil was waiting right outside. Unfortunately, due to extra security being done they were checking every single bag in the five flights that had just landed.
After an hour of waiting it was now after midnight, Karla and Brianne told me I could just go out and meet Phil and they would get my bags for me (how nice of them)! So off I went. As I said, I’ve never met Phil so I was a little concerned I wouldn’t recognize him, but as soon as I saw him I knew it was him.
We grabbed a coffee and chatted about his wife, new baby girl and of course ListMessenger & mosListMessenger for about 45 minutes before Karla and Brianne finally emerged with the luggage. Phil was then kind enough to drive us back to our hotel in Gatwick before having to drive another hour back into London to the hotel where he and his wife were staying. His hospitality was greatly appreciated, a true reflection of the English people.
WOW! Great job capturing our trip. That’s amazing. I do have to point out there are a _few_ spelling mistakes, but after writing a 13-page blog, that is expected. I would also like to add to the currencies part of your blog; you mentioned that you paid almost $10.00 CAD for a coke for me, but conveniently left out the fact that you paid almost $20.00 CAD for a rye and tonic water at the disco, which you learned is _not_ a good drink like drunk Matt thought it was on new year’s! HA.
Glad you had a good holiday all in all. Easy holidays that go exactly as planned don’t actually exist… they are just a hopeful dream… so it sounds like you did alright.
Sorry we didn’t get to see you while you were there!
What an amazing story! I’m so happy that you took the time to write it all down! It is definitly a wonderful addition to the pictures (which I haven’t seen yet, but will be heading there next!) All too often people have only the photos, which is great, but it’s always nice to have that extra little bit and write down everything that is still fresh in your memory! Scary conversions and bad hotels aside, I do hope that you and Karla have the opportunity to return to Spain (all inclusive, of course!) and enjoy the things you missed out on the first time! It sounds like you had a wonderful time in England though (minus snotty hotel clerk!) and I was very happy to live vicariously through your tale!
Haha… thanks for the reminder about the Jack Daniels and Soda Water… it was actually 10 Euro’s, which is about $15.00CAD. Yeah, it was expensive, but comparatively not as expensive as your Coke still! haha.
Any who, in-case anyone is interested I finally got my photo’s online. Sorry for the delay… I know I disappointed both Karla and Brianne for taking so long.
