An English Adventure 2006-07

For the next six days (over Christmas) we stayed put in Peterborough. It’s a nice smaller city, with a beautiful city centre. My first trip down to the city centre (downtown to us Canadians) was at dusk and my sister took us to the local Cathedral. I was floored… I couldn’t even believe it. Coming from Canada, I had never seen such amazing detail on such an old, enormous, amazing architectural structure. We walked all around the whole thing, going back into a court yard that was constructed in 1345. This is really when the term “Old Country” hit me… realizing that the entire continent of North America wasn’t even discovered for another 147 years, and Canada as-we-know it wasn’t formed for another 522 years… let that one sink in for a second. We ended up going inside the cathedral after dark where I saw some of the most amazing detailed art work (the building really is a piece of art) that I had ever seen.

Christmas was here! But Brianne was actually working on Christmas day (early), so Dean was nice enough to drive me out to see where they work. My sister works with children, and children scare the bejesus out of me. Being a designer and a programmer, I like a certain amount of predictability in my environment: if($Children != $Predictable) { $Matt = $Petrified; } … I really enjoyed seeing her work and meeting more of the people that she works with; I had a nice time. Karla sat this experience out in lieu of taking an extended nap… bugger.

So we did our Christmas celebrating on boxing day, when Dean cooked an amazing turkey, complete with potatoes, stuffing, squash, etc. and Brianne cooked a fabulous vegetarian lasagna. Most of the staff that Brianne and Dean work with were invited over for a huge Christmas dinner and Karla and I really enjoyed meeting everyone (Matt, Udo, Garreth, Webster… crap, those are the only names I can remember right now)… There was about 11 – 15 people there for dinner and beyond. We had a fantastic time, we really enjoyed it.

  1. WOW! Great job capturing our trip. That’s amazing. I do have to point out there are a _few_ spelling mistakes, but after writing a 13-page blog, that is expected. I would also like to add to the currencies part of your blog; you mentioned that you paid almost $10.00 CAD for a coke for me, but conveniently left out the fact that you paid almost $20.00 CAD for a rye and tonic water at the disco, which you learned is _not_ a good drink like drunk Matt thought it was on new year’s! HA.

  2. Glad you had a good holiday all in all. Easy holidays that go exactly as planned don’t actually exist… they are just a hopeful dream… so it sounds like you did alright.

Sorry we didn’t get to see you while you were there!

  3. What an amazing story! I’m so happy that you took the time to write it all down! It is definitly a wonderful addition to the pictures (which I haven’t seen yet, but will be heading there next!) All too often people have only the photos, which is great, but it’s always nice to have that extra little bit and write down everything that is still fresh in your memory! Scary conversions and bad hotels aside, I do hope that you and Karla have the opportunity to return to Spain (all inclusive, of course!) and enjoy the things you missed out on the first time! It sounds like you had a wonderful time in England though (minus snotty hotel clerk!) and I was very happy to live vicariously through your tale!

  4. Haha… thanks for the reminder about the Jack Daniels and Soda Water… it was actually 10 Euro’s, which is about $15.00CAD. Yeah, it was expensive, but comparatively not as expensive as your Coke still! haha.

Any who, in-case anyone is interested I finally got my photo’s online. Sorry for the delay… I know I disappointed both Karla and Brianne for taking so long.

Geeze guys, sorry that I didn’t approve your comments earlier… I actually have to approve them at this point because of all the damn comment spam I get. There was over 500 spam comments I had to go through to find these!

    Thank-you very much for commenting!

  6. Just another quick test for the comment system.
