On December 31st, 2006 I awoke with blood shot eyes and even more tired than when I went to bed the night before, Karla was worst… nearly in tears. If something didn’t change to allow us to sleep soon, I feared my trip to Spain would go down in history as a huge mistake. Today Karla and I were on a quest: find a new hotel. I walked into 15 hotels (all 4 and 5 star beautiful hotels) and did not find one with any vacancies (after all, it was New Years Eve) until we were a solid 40 minute walk away from La Rambla, which was fine by me and even more fine by Karla. The Condes de Barcelona Hotel had a room with two single beds and it was a beautiful hotel with beautiful rooms and most importantly to me at this point… double-pained glass, on a double set of doors to the outside street! Yeah. The next step was convincing my sister that we needed to move hotels. See I found out Brianne is capable of sleeping no matter what the hell is going on. She slept through the shouting, door banging, running around guys of the first night, and the crowds of people outside our window the second night. After a little convincing, she accepted the offer and off we went to now change hotels.
Upon arrival back to the Espana Hotel we explained our situation to the front desk clerk and came to the realization that we wouldn’t be getting any money back for the following two nights we pre-booked, upsetting but a price we were willing to pay at this point. We quickly gathered belongings and hopped in a taxi (which came right to the front door of the Espana Hotel to pick us up, much to the contradiction of our first taxi driver who dropped us off and made us walk five blocks with all of our luggage two days prior) and headed for luxury and to get some sleep. We all had a siesta from about 2:00PM to 4:30PM, which along with the fact that I was now relaxed in our beautiful new hotel room, gave us enough energy to really enjoy the rest of the day and New Years Eve!
WOW! Great job capturing our trip. That’s amazing. I do have to point out there are a _few_ spelling mistakes, but after writing a 13-page blog, that is expected. I would also like to add to the currencies part of your blog; you mentioned that you paid almost $10.00 CAD for a coke for me, but conveniently left out the fact that you paid almost $20.00 CAD for a rye and tonic water at the disco, which you learned is _not_ a good drink like drunk Matt thought it was on new year’s! HA.
Glad you had a good holiday all in all. Easy holidays that go exactly as planned don’t actually exist… they are just a hopeful dream… so it sounds like you did alright.
Sorry we didn’t get to see you while you were there!
What an amazing story! I’m so happy that you took the time to write it all down! It is definitly a wonderful addition to the pictures (which I haven’t seen yet, but will be heading there next!) All too often people have only the photos, which is great, but it’s always nice to have that extra little bit and write down everything that is still fresh in your memory! Scary conversions and bad hotels aside, I do hope that you and Karla have the opportunity to return to Spain (all inclusive, of course!) and enjoy the things you missed out on the first time! It sounds like you had a wonderful time in England though (minus snotty hotel clerk!) and I was very happy to live vicariously through your tale!
Haha… thanks for the reminder about the Jack Daniels and Soda Water… it was actually 10 Euro’s, which is about $15.00CAD. Yeah, it was expensive, but comparatively not as expensive as your Coke still! haha.
Any who, in-case anyone is interested I finally got my photo’s online. Sorry for the delay… I know I disappointed both Karla and Brianne for taking so long.
